Seizure

What are Seizures, and what is Epilepsy?

Seizures are uncontrollable & sudden abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain that causes violent shaking, convulsions, loss of control, and sometimes unconsciousness. Seizures can range from mild to severe and on average last roughly from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Warning symptoms before a seizure includes nausea, vertigo, anxiety, and visual interferences like bright flashes of light before the eyes. People are diagnosed with Epilepsy (which is another term for Seizure Disorder) when they have had two or more seizures.

Seizures and Epilepsy

Seizures can be classified into two categories:
  • Generalized Seizures (affecting both sides of the brain)
  • Focal Seizures (affecting one area of the brain)
Generalized Seizures:
  • Absence Seizures: cause rapid blinking or a few seconds of zoning out.
  • Tonic-Clonic Seizures: cause someone to cry out, lose consciousness, fall to the ground, have muscle spasms.
Focal Seizures:
  • Simple Seizures: affect a small part of the brain, can cause twitching and changes in physical sensation, such as smell and taste.
  • Complex Seizures: makes people feel confused and or dazed and unable to respond to direct, simple questions
  • Secondary Generalized Seizures: typically begins in one side of the brain and expands into both, thus turning into a generalized seizure.

Seizure and Epilepsy can be caused by a variety of conditions that affect a person’s brain.

Some of these causes include:
  • Stress
  • Wrong medication dosage or missing medication
  • Severe lack of sleep
  • Post-Strokes
  • Brain tumors
  • Brain infection
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Loss of oxygen to the brain
  • Genetic disorders
  • Other neurological diseases

How we can help?

For seizures symptoms, besides traditional anti-epileptic medications, Elumind’s approach features an advanced QEEG brain mapping system to identify and understand the exact nature of the seizure episode(s). To reduce severity and frequency, an individual protocol of non-invasive neurofeedback treatments will support the brain’s optimal adaptive functioning.
